Specially designed for people who stay in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel or Tulum so they can´t miss the opportunity to traveling around the wonderful Holbox island in one day without having to stay here necessarily. Holbox island is one of the beauties of the entire world, is located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, México. This island is within the area of protection of the Flora and Fauna Wildlife known as the"Yum Balam" ecological reserve. It is bordered by Cabo Catoche and the Yalahau Lagoon on the east which separates it from the mainland. Holbox Island is about 43 km long and its beaches are covered with fine sand and jade colored seashells. Holbox island is only about 2 hours from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya.
Our first stop is Solferino, the oldest Mayan village located in the northern state of Quintana Roo. In Maya, this town is called "Labcah," a name which means old town. Its name comes from the exploitation of logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum), a tree whose trunks were piled in the center of town. When it rained, this wood changed into a reddish color known as solferino. The jungle begins on the north of this small town. We will arrive at our tourist stop at this beautiful spot surrounded by tropical vegetation where we will be served a continental breakfast with the the following options: coffee, tea, toast, pastries with jam and butter plus natural waters, juices, and organic fruits from the garden. This place, besides being lusciously green and tropical, has facilities and the highest quality bathrooms. This is in line with our goal to provide impeccable service. If you are lucky, you will be able to appreciate many species of birds from this region like the Clock Bird, a regular visitor of this garden.
After breakfast and in the same village ( 2 minutes away ) we will visit the Yum Balam orquidean site where Ceiba trees ( holy mayan tree ) and pitch ( guanacastle ) over a thousand year old will be there to be admired.
The next stop will be Chiquila which is a 10 minute drive away. Our boats with their respective professional captains and guides will be waiting to start the visit of Isla Pajaros and Isla Pasión, where we can enjoy to see the different varieties of tropical birds and pink flamingos with the chance sightings of dolphins that live in the Yalahau Lagoon.
3- Laguna Yalahau:
The beautiful Yalahau Lagoon is a natural paradise surrounded by mangroves; this lagoon separates Holbox Island from the mainland. The Yalahau Lagoon is a rich natural habitat that provides shelter to a number of species, including the spectacular pink flamingos that come to feed during the months from April to October. There are schools of fish and even dolphins swimming around the island.
4.- Isla Pájaros:
Also in the lagoon you can find the Morena Island, also known as Bird Island, which is home to more than 140 species of birds. It is common to find white ibis, frigates, white egrets, double-crested cormorants, white pelicans, red egrets, pink spoonbills, herons, gray pelicans and pink flamingos among the others species. The island has a diameter of about 500 meters and the land is a mixture of sand and guano. Bird Island is a protected area only accessible by boat on which walking is not permitted. The birds that live there do not fear the proximity of humans, so it is possible to approach the island without disturbing them.
5.- Holbox Island :
After enjoying these natural wonders, we will head to our last but not least important point of interest. We will arrive at Holbox Island at approximately 12:00 PM on the island´s north beach. There, you can enjoy walking on the beach or taking advantage of the calm emerald water before a buffet will await you at the hotel where we will have lunch. After the meal, if you do not want to use the hotel beach or swimming pool facilities ( no towel included ) you will be invited to use golf carts for an hour and a half ( from 2 pm to 3.30 pm ) to tour Holbox Island, a place that since ancient times has been considered to contain extreme beauty and was used for solace and relaxation by the ancient Maya. When the Spanish arrived in the sixteenth century, they found an abandoned Island, but as in the past, they were amazed by its unique beauty. Unfortunately, everything that begins must come to an end and departure time from the island is due at 4 pm from the main dock ( la caleta ).
